There’s More Than One Way to Move

Moving doesn’t always mean that you must hire your own truck or movers. There are other options to relocate your possessions.

Share a Truck

You may not need a moving truck all to yourself. If you aren’t moving a great deal of possessions, you might be able to share a moving truck with another moving company customer. Ask about this option for interstate moves.

Ship By Freight

FedEx says that any shipment over 150 pounds is considered freight. You can ship items in bulk by land, air, or sea or some combination. It could be cost effective depending on the circumstances of your move.

Portable Storage Containers

With portable storage containers, a company drops off a container at your current home. You fill it with your possessions. The company picks it up and ships it to your new home. Remember to ask if portable storage containers are allowed on the property or street of your current and future homes.

Replace It

Not everything you own is a treasure. Ask yourself if it is worth the cost and effort to move an item. If it isn’t, donate, sell, or dispose of the item and buy another one when you reach your destination. Anything you don’t have to take with you makes the move a little easier and more affordable.

Is Rainwater Harvesting Illegal in Texas?

Rainwater harvesting is good for your wallet and for the environment also. With the limited water supply and growing population, the efficient use of water is critical. Whether you live in an area with minimal rainfall or maxim rainfall, you should conserve as much water as possible so you can save money, and to prevent flooding and erosion.

Statewide Support for rainwater Harvesting

Texas has several laws that support rainwater harvesting.

  • Texas Property Code- which prevents a homeowner’s association from prohibiting the use of the rainwater harvesting systems
  • The state is also requiring certain state facilities to incorporate new rainwater harvesting systems in their designs
  • Municipalities and counties are also encouraged to promote rainwater harvesting
  • During a specific weekend water-efficient products can be purchased tax-free, including the equipment needed for rainwater harvesting

Financial Incentives

There are financial perks for purchasing and installing rainwater harvesting equipment. Before buying check with your local government or water facility to find out if there are any incentives available such as rebates, discounts, and tax exemptions to see if you can lower your costs. There are some cities and counties that offer rebates on harvesting water or provide discounts on rain barrels.

The Texas Legislature Law allows the exemption with part of or all of the assessed value of the property with approved water conservation initiatives. Individuals that are planning to install the harvesting system should check with their appraisal district to learn if they are exempt from county property taxes.

4 Organizing Hacks That’ll Instantly Upgrade and Declutter Your Fridge, According to Pro Organizers

A full fridge reorganization might be at the very bottom of the list of things you’d like to do today (or this year). From mopping up pesky old crumbs in hard-to-reach drawers and checking the expiration date on sauces you haven’t used in years, it can be a truly annoying job. But once everything is cleared out and it’s time to start new, you don’t have to do things like you always have.

There are tried-and-true hacks that professional organizers use to ensure they are maximizing every inch of an overstuffed fridge, where space is at a premium. This means working smarter, not harder, to choose organization tools that will look amazing not only for your “after” photo but also every time you open the fridge. Not only that, but some also work to help preserve your food longer. Here’s what they recommend.

Maximize vertical space while saving your parsley’s life

When you embark on a new recipe that calls for fresh herbs, you might roll your eyes knowing that after using just one sprig of parsley, the rest of them are going to slowly rot in your fridge until you ultimately throw them out. But according to Cindy Thomas, professional home organizer and CEO at Simply Organized Interiors, it doesn’t have to be this way. Instead, maximize space by using vertical Herb Savor Pods, which keep herbs fresh for up to three weeks and take up much less space than a large flat plastic container. Just remember to change the water through the tethered filler cap every three to five days, and you will enjoy better organization and herbs for many more recipes to come.

Use see-through temperature-controlled bins

Visibility is one of the ultimate stressors in a fridge or freezer, with foods and containers stacked on top of one another until you can barely tell what groceries you actually have. This is an issue because it might increase your tendency to waste food when you discover something way in the back you meant to eat. In addition, various locations in your fridge might be colder or warmer than others. These stackable organizer bins that Thomas recommends solve both problems.

“What’s really nice is that you can see everything inside of it. It’s a great way to put like things together into one space. For example, lunch meat, cheeses, breakfast meats are a few ways that we use these drawers because we always have those items in rotation,” she says. “A big bonus is if you can label the drawer front so that only those items get put into those specific pull-out drawers.”

Stop storing dairy in the door — and try this instead

If you are storing your eggs, cheese, butter, milk, or other dairy items on the door, you might be unnecessarily warming them up every time the fridge is open. Marcia Sloman, a professional organizer at Under Control Organizing, says that only condiments should go on the doors instead. For maximum visibility, group them by height, not category, so that you can easily reach the back. This also presents an organized and visually appealing look to your fridge when you open the door, rather than random condiments haphazardly scattered.

Declutter by updating your leftovers’ storage system

We all love a good leftover lunch after a tasty dinner the night before, but storage boxes cluttering up your fridge doesn’t help anyone. Instead, Sloman says to switch to Ziploc Grip ‘n Seal bags, not the slider ones, which have a boxy bottom that stand on their own. Then, you can stack leftovers vertically, and can even store them alongside your marinating dinner for the next night. She also recommends dating and labeling each leftover for more organization. A simple roll of masking tape and a Sharpie does the trick.

If you’re hungry for more tips, Sloman recommends the following for further organization:

  • For the crisper drawers: Line with a foam bottom to encourage air circulation. Keep at minimum humidity.
  • Crisper drawer one: Store fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Crisper drawer two: Store breads.
  • Deli drawer: Store cheeses and packaged meats.
  • Additional fruits are best kept in a colander on a lower shelf if they have ripened well on your counter.

Buying a Home—It’s About More Than Features

We all love the features and amenities when buying a new home, but we must remember there’s more to a property than just the hard wood floors, chef’s kitchen, and the spa like bathrooms. Here are some additional items to consider before buying a home.

Will it be loud?

That one peaceful street you drove by on a Sunday heading to an open house could possibly turn into a not so peaceful street during the week. Or even the train tracks nearby could prompt hearing frequent train horns all throughout the night. You should always try to visit the home at different times on different days to get the knowledge of what the house is like for yourself. You could also consider asking the current neighbors what it is like throughout the day, week, and weekends.

How old is that really expensive thing to replace?

When going over the seller’s disclosure you may notice that there are some appliances and systems that have some major known issues, but the seller’s disclosure won’t tell you that the HVAC or the roof is needing to be replaced soon. It’s best to know the age of certain appliances so it can help you estimate when they are needing to be replaced. Getting an inspection of the home will give you more information about whether certain systems are deficient, but you shouldn’t always count on an inspection to reveal how much life is left in certain components.

Can I do it My way?

The homeowner’s association can benefit property owners the only downfall is that they come with rules and regulations that must be followed. You should always make sure to review any documents received from an HOA before you commit to the purchase. Just like when living in the city there are codes and laws that restrict what you can and can’t do with your property. No one wants to find out after they close on the property, they can’t paint there house a different, bright, color or even park their boat trailer in the driveway.

Will the view change?

The view from a home whether it be hills, a lake, or even the city skyline can really be the make or break of selling the home. Are you sure the view will remain the same? Always check with the builder if you plan on buying a home in a master planned community to see if there are plans to build something that may block the view. You can also look at the zoning of the area to have a better understanding of whether the view may be jeopardized or not. Also keep in mind that the development plans and the zoning of the area could possibly change in the future.

Underrated Staging Tips for Your Home

When staging your home, you might focus on things like decluttering, repainting some walls, and planting some new flowers. But what about the areas that are overlooked that actually make a huge difference?

Mailbox

Black mailbox with white letteringBesides the front lawn, the driveway, and the home itself, the mailbox is one of the first things people notice when coming to a showing. It may be leaning, it could be rusty or chipping, the colors could be faded, or it could simply just look outdated. By updating your mailbox, you could improve the look of the front of your home exceptionally!

Reglaze

If you have an old bathroom, re-glazing the tiles may be the biggest improvement you could make in your home! Michael Pinter, a home flipper from Long Island says,  “The best tip I use to get top dollar for some of our houses is to reglaze an old bathroom.” He then goes on to claim that it makes not only the bathroom- but the whole house look “30 years younger.” By reglazing your bathroom tiles (or anywhere in your home that has tiles), you can sell your outdated home so much faster!

Give Rooms Purpose

Sometimes after getting comfortable in our home, we tend to change some of the rooms’ purposes- for example we may change the dining room into the kids’ playroom, or maybe the media room becomes a guest room. Whatever those changes were, you may want to consider switching the rooms back to their original purpose so people can more easily envision their lives in that home. You wouldn’t want to show your home to people who can’t picture living there!

Appreciation sells!

You and your friends/family have created sweet memories  in your home that will last forever. Whether those are memories of baking cookies at 2am with your loved ones or the room where your baby grew up that has pencil markings of their growth on that one wall. We all have those special moments that no one can take away – or recreate. Share those stories of love with the people who you are showing your home to, so they can see your appreciation and understand that it is more than just a house. It’s a home! One that has served you well and is now ready to serve a new family with new memories.
